Would You Go to a Club with "Molly?"

Recently, a drug has come onto the club and music scene.  It has been popularized by famous music artists like Madonna, Miley Cyrus, and Kanye West.  It is the popular drug MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine), known popularly as the street name, “Molly.”

It is usually taken orally in a pressed pill form or in a powder form that can be snorted or swallowed.  It is known to resemble stimulants or psychedelic drugs and is highly illegal.  it has been responsible for numerous overdoses and four deaths over the summer of 2013.  “Molly” made her entrance in the late 80s/early 90s under the popular name “Ectasy”, but due to many hospitalizations and deaths, it began waning.  It has become popular among the club and music scene.  It is a highly accessible and marketed recreational drug where users are assumed to believe it is less dangerous, while most likely being made with such substances as Ritalin or LSD.  Molly gives the user an euphoric feeling with hallucinogenic properties, but according to DEA spokesman, Rusty Payne, “the reality of a promised pure form of MDMA doesn’t really exist.”  It is a synthetic drug that has been marketed in the US/European countries that is based out of China, where 80 to 90% of the drug could be laced with something other than what the user expects to be in it.  Some common symptoms of the drug are a rapid heartbeat, overheating, excessive sweating, shivering, and involuntary twitching.

Education is key to informing teens and young adults as well as parents when it comes to drug use.  Katie Couric did a segment on her October 17th, 2013 episode, educating viewers and parents on this recreational drug known as “Molly.”
